Race, Ethnicity, Sex, Gender and Sexuality

This blog will be covering race, ethnicity, sex, gender and sexuality in society. The functionalist theory emphasizes the ways in which these are dysfunctional-a society that practices discrimination fails to develop and utilize the resources of minority members, and prejudice and discrimination aggravate social problems. Conflict theory shows competition over wealth, power, and prestige contributes to racial and ethnic group tensions as minority group members are viewed as "threats" to the majority group's way of life. Symbolic interactionism refers to meanings, labels, and definitions are socially constructed through our interactions with others.

Looking at the FBI's hate crime data, we see that in the United States, the most bias category for a hate crime is race/ethnicity and the least being gender. Out of 11,021, 6,108 crimes are connected to race/ethnicity/ancestry. 2,497 for religion, 1,620 for sexual orientation, 516 for gender identity, 162 for disabilities, and 118 for gender. In Florida, we see similar trends. Race/ethnicity is the leading category, followed by religion. Looking specifically at Anti-Black or African Americans in Florida, we see about a 60% coverage. The most common offense type is aggravated assault and the most common location as at a residence. Whites are responsible for most of the offenses.

The non-profit I chose this week is the Women's Center of Brevard. Their goal is to assist women, men, and children who have experienced trauma. They aid in creating healthy, safe and self-sufficient lives by providing support, education, counseling, etc. They have helped over 60 families with housing and income. 85% moved to permanent housing and 88% had increased income. They offer victim services, counseling, prevention education, housing, and more.
