Race, Ethnicity, Sex, Gender and Sexuality
This blog will be covering race, ethnicity, sex, gender and sexuality in society. The functionalist theory emphasizes the ways in which these are dysfunctional-a society that practices discrimination fails to develop and utilize the resources of minority members, and prejudice and discrimination aggravate social problems. Conflict theory shows competition over wealth, power, and prestige contributes to racial and ethnic group tensions as minority group members are viewed as "threats" to the majority group's way of life. Symbolic interactionism refers to meanings, labels, and definitions are socially constructed through our interactions with others. Looking at the FBI's hate crime data, we see that in the United States, the most bias category for a hate crime is race/ethnicity and the least being gender.
